Vol. 476 No. 7

Written Answers. - Computerisation Programme.

Rory O'Hanlon

Question:

258 Dr. O'Hanlon asked the Minister for Education the number of primary schools equipped with computers; the plans, if any, she has to ensure that such technology is available for use by children in primary schools; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [8164/97]

My Department does not have precise data on the extent to which primary schools have computers. It is estimated that at least 2,100 of the 3,335 schools have computers at present.

In January of this year, I established a steering group to develop proposals on increased integration of Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) into first and second level education. This group is due to report shortly and, subject to available resources, I hope to take follow-up action on its recommendations this year.
