Vol. 477 No. 4

Written Answers. - Ireland-India Trade.

Liz O'Donnell

Question:

29 Ms O'Donnell asked the Minister for Tourism and Trade to provide information on the bilateral trade between Ireland and India over the past three years; the steps, if any, being taken to develop this valuable export market for Irish products; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [9365/97]

The value of Irish merchandise exports to India has grown steadily over the last three years and 1996 has seen a major improvement on the 1995 export performance. In 1994 merchandise exports totalled £17.4 million and grew by 6 per cent in 1995 to total £18.5 million. Preliminary trade figures for last year indicate that exports grew by a dramatic 32 per cent to total £24.5 million. The main products exported are scientific instruments, computers, chemicals and machinery.

Imports from India also grew significantly in 1996 and according to preliminary estimates imports totalled £58.7 million. The main goods imported are textiles, computer parts and clothing. A series of trade missions since 1993, most recently in November 1995 led by me have generated considerable interest in Irish goods and services in India and have made the large Indian market more accessible to many Irish exporters.
An Bord Tráchtála advises me that its objective in 1997 is to make every effort to assist Irish exporters to India to increase market share in niche areas including in the pharmaceutical, consumer goods, infrastructure and international services sector. Since the nature of the Indian market will continue to favour joint venture co-operation and partnership approaches, I also understand that An Bord Tráchtála will continue to encourage and support the recently formed Ireland — India Business and Economic Association.
