Vol. 477 No. 7

Written Answers. - Medical Bureau of Road Safety.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

82 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for the Environment the number and titles of the posts which have been vacated and filled in the Medical Bureau of Road Safety since 1 January 1995; and whether he has satisfied himself that the bureau has functioned with the appropriate number of staff since that date in accordance with Part V of the Road Traffic Act, 1968. [10254/97]

Apart from the director, the bureau is staffed by employees of UCD who are seconded to the bureau on a repayment basis. The full staffed complement is 12, comprising the director, five analysts, four administrative staff, one senior laboratory technician and one laboratory attendant. This level of staffing has proved adequate to carry out the bureau's functions in full compliance with statutory requirements.

Between 23 February and 14 October 1996, the post of laboratory attendant in the bureau was not filled on a permanent basis but, for a substantial part of that time, a laboratory attendant was on loan from UCD. The period of appointment of the director was extended for one year from 15 August 1996. Otherwise no vacancy in the staff of the bureau arose and it has been fully staffed during the period in question.
