Kathleen Lynch

Question:

136 Kathleen Lynch asked the Minister for Education the allocation to adult literacy and community education in 1996 and 1997; and the various components of that allocation. [10478/97]

In 1996 my Department allocated £3.255 million under the Adult Literacy and Community Education Scheme (ALCES) and the Special Initiatives for Disadvantaged Adults Scheme (SPIDAS), for the provision of literacy and basic education courses and special initiatives for disadvantaged adults.

The various components of that allocation are as follows:

ALCES-SPIDAS

Provision 1996

£000

Vocational Education Committees

2,853

Voluntary organisations

113

Adult Education in Non vocational education committee Schools

110

Secondment of Teachers to Area Based Partnerships

90

27

European Year of Lifelong Learning

20

Pilot Project in Adult Literacy

15

10

Others (small projects)

17

The 1997 provision is £3.325 million. Its distribution remains to be decided but is likely to largely follow the 1996 pattern.

Eric J. Byrne

Question:

137 Mr. E. Byrne asked the Minister for Education whether funding for the Area Development Management (ADM) Ltd. partnership in respect of adult education was paid to the partnerships, to the vocational education committees, or to any other body or bodies by or through her Department in 1996 and 1997; and the amount of any such allocation. [10479/97]

In 1996, my Department paid £140,000 to eight vocational education committees towards the ADM partnerships in respect of their adult education activities. No decision has yet been taken on funding for the partnerships for 1997.

Indirect funding is also provided by my Department in respect of the cost of the secondment of teachers to the partnerships in the amount of £90,000 per annum.
