Vol. 478 No. 1

Written Answers. - Deployment of Civil Servants.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

31 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Finance the number of civil servants assigned to each of the political parties in Dáil Éireann; and the grades involved in each case. [10409/97]

No civil servants are assigned to any political party in the House of the Oireachtas.

Members of Dáil and Seanad Eireann and political parties represented in both Houses employ staff under a scheme of secretarial assistance for non-office holding Members who are paid from the Vote of the Office of the Houses of the Oireachtas. It may be that the Deputy has that scheme in mind.

Under the scheme, staff are provided on the basis of one assistant per Deputy and one assistant for every three Senators. There are, in addition, a number of staff provided to multimember parties in the Houses to carry out work related to their parliamentary activities. The current allocation of staff paid from the Vote for the Office of the Houses of the Oireachtas under the scheme is as follows. Where one job is carried out by two people on a job-sharing basis, this is counted as one post.
