Vol. 478 No. 4

Written Answers. - Teacher Appointments.

John Ellis

Question:

161 Mr. Ellis asked the Minister for Education if she will provide an extra teacher for a school (details supplied) in County Leitrim which is classed as disadvantaged and is due to lose a teacher on grounds of retirement this year. [11332/97]

The staffing of a national school for a particular year is determined by the enrolment of the school on 30 September of the previous year. The enrolment of the school referred to by the Deputy was 124 pupils on 30 September 1996. This enrolment warrants a staffing of a principal and four assistants for the 1997-98 school year. Accordingly, the school will retain its present staffing complement for the next school year. In the circumstances, the teacher retiring may be replaced by another permanent teacher.
