Question:

72 D'fhiafraigh Éamon Ó Cuív den Aire Sláinte cén uair a aistreofar cainteoir ó dhúchas Gaeilge ó mo dháilcheantar atá in Áras Naomh Breandáin, Baile Locha Riach, go hospidéal Pháirc Mheirlinne áit a mbeidh sé i bhfad níos cóngaraí dá mhuintir; agus an ndéanfaidh sé ráiteas ina thaobh. [11403/97]

Limerick East): In the first instance, responsibility for providing residential and nursing units in the Galway area is a matter for the Western Health Board.

The Western Health Board state that it is board policy to place patients in hospitals or homes as close as possible to their own locality. This is also the case in relation to the people from Gaeltacht regions.

However, a patient's medical needs are the primary consideration in deciding on a suitable setting.Medical needs are frequently more appropriately met in a hospital or home which may be some distance from the patient's locality.

If the Deputy has a particular individual in mind, he should refer the matter to the Western Health Board for investigation.
