Motor insurers accept or reject individual risks on the basis of their underwriting experience. However, because of the compulsory nature of motor insurance, a mechanism exists under the declined cases committee to consider motor insurance risks which have been refused by individual insurance companies. The committee is composed of representatives from authorised insurance companies under the chairmanship of the Irish Insurance Federation. Before a case may be considered by the committee it will be necessary for the individual concerned or his representative to forward five written refusals from motor insurers directly to the Declined Cases Committee at the Irish Insurance Federation, 39 Molesworth Street, Dublin 2.
The documentation should indicate the order in which all the companies were approached together with details of previous insurance held in connection with the risk in question. The committee should nominate one of the authorised insurance companies to quote for the risk.
