Question:

189 Miss M. Wallace asked the Minister for Justice the level of personnel assigned to Slane Garda station, County Meath, for each of the years from 1993 to date in 1997; her views on whether there is a sufficient level of manpower for this area; and if she will make a statement on the matter. I propose to take Questions Nos. 187, 188 and 189 together.

The detailed allocation of Garda personnel and resources to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities. They have expressed concern, and I share that concern, about providing the kind of detailed information sought by the Deputy on the grounds of security and in the interests of crime prevention generally.

However, I can provide the Deputy with the information on a district basis which is set out in the following table. It should be noted that Duleek and Slane from part of the Navan Garda District and Laytown forms part of the Drogheda Garda district.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that they are satisfied that the present deployment of Garda personnel in Duleek, Slane and Laytown is adequate. However, they have assured me that the policing needs of these areas are kept under continuous review and any necessary changes are made.
