Vol. 479 No. 2

Written Answers. - Harbour Works.

Joe Walsh

Question:

405 Mr. J. Walsh asked the Minister for the Marine when work will commence on development works at Castletownbere Harbour, County Cork, including dredging and pier resurfacing, as promised in 1996. [12839/97]

I have allocated £457,000 towards development works in 1997 at Castletownbere fishery harbour centre to improve the Bere Island slipway, upgrade the auction hall and undertake a number of other improvement works including fendering renewal, upgrading of the effluent system and the provision of additional power points. These development works are under way at present.

Following extensive site investigations and a hydrographic survey carried out in 1996, dredging requirements are being reassessed by the Department, in consultation with the users of the harbour, with a view to drawing up an agreed dredging programme. The Department is also costing and assessing pier resurfacing proposals in consultation with the users with a view to undertaking these works as a priority.
