Vol. 480 No. 6

Written Answers - Departmental Costs.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

408 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs the cost of changing the name and responsibilities of his Department; if such expense will be borne from internal savings or by Supplementary Estimate; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14848/97]

I wish to draw the Deputy's attention to my reply to a similar question on 9 July last. As stated in that reply the steps necessary to give effect to the change of name of the Department will be implemented on a progressive basis as stocks of materials become depleted and replenished in the normal course. Where opportunities arise other aspects of the name change will be effected with a view to minimising costs. Additional costs have been negligible so far in 1997.

It is not expected that there will be a Supplementary Estimate this year.

As the Deputy is aware, my Department has recently been assigned additional responsibilities. These include responsibility for marriage support services, family mediation services, births, marriages and deaths registration legislation, and for progressing other issues, in particular initiatives in the community for children arising from the Commission on the Family.
