Vol. 480 No. 6

Written Answers - Garda Stations.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

515 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the progress to date in relation to the review of Garda divisional responsibilities which will facilitate the provision of a new garda station at Leixlip, County Kildare; when this station will be operational; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [14806/97]

The Garda authorities are responsible for the day to day operations of the force and they have informed me that the division of Dublin Metropolitan Area West became administratively and operationally effective as a division at midnight on 31 July 1997. This provided for the upgrading of Leixlip sub-station to the status of sub-district station.

Leixlip station currently operates from the existing sub-station accommodation. The existing building is being examined with a view to providing additional accommodation on a temporary basis for the increased personnel allocted to Leixlip station.

It is proposed to build a new Garda station in Leixlip. However, no suitable site has been located to date and it is not possible to state when the new station will be operational.
