Vol. 480 No. 6

Written Answers - Leaving Certificate Examiners.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

594 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education the standards required by his Department in respect of qualified examiners for the leaving certificate English honours course; if these standards are being applied in all cases; and if he has satisfied himself with the operation of the current system. [14692/97]

Examiners are appointed for the leaving certificate English higher level examination on the basis of a combination of their academic qualifications, teaching experience and previous experience as examiners. All the examiners appointed for the 1997 examination have considerable teaching experience including experience of teaching English at leaving certificate higher level and have wide experience as examiners of English at this or other levels. While I am satisfied with the current arrangements for the appointment of examiners for English at leaving certificate higher level, I am also considering possible changes to these arrangements in order to increase the number of such qualified persons available for appointment as examiners.
