Vol. 481 No. 1

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Examination.

Willie Penrose

Question:

267 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will extend the time period for permitting students who wish to have their marks in leaving certificate subjects in 1997 re-examined; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [15554/97]

: Appeals are processed in a finite period after the issue of results and the outcome made known to students as quickly as possible to enable account to be taken by third level and other institutions of any revised results.

The closing date for receipt of appeal applications was 27 August 1997 with the date of issue of results set for 1 October 1997. These dates were signalled well in advance in an information booklet titled "Results Appeal Process" issued to schools, parents and students.

As the Deputy may appreciate, my Department works under enormous pressure and within a very tight schedule to process all applications to meet this deadline.

In order to be fair to all applicants who succeeded in forwarding their applications on time and in order that the Department meet its obligations to these students, the process could not be delayed to cater for late applications.
