153 Mr. G. Mitchell asked the Minister for Education and Science if public funding is channelled to the School of Clinical Speech and Language Studies, Faculty of Health Science, University of Dublin, Trinity College; if so, the purpose of such funding; and the amount of funding for each of the past three years and 1997. I propose to answer Questions Nos. 142 and 153 together.

Funding is provided by my Department to the Higher Education Authority which has the statutory responsibility for co-ordinating State investment in higher education. The authority provides a block recurrent grant to Trinity College Dublin which includes funding for the School of Clinical Speech and Language Studies. The authority has advised that it is not possible to separately identify the funding provided to the school.

The purpose of the funding for the school is to facilitate teaching and research in the area of clinical speech and language studies. It is understood that there were over 100 full-time students in the 1996-97 academic year on the Bachelor of Science degree course in clinical speech and language studies. In addition there are a number of full-time and part-time postgraduate students in the school who are pursuing MSc and PhD degrees by research.
