Vol. 481 No. 3

Written Answers. - Maternity Services.

Ivor Callely

Question:

116 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health and Children the number of social workers attached to maternity hospitals; if he has satisfied himself that there are sufficient social workers to meet current demands; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16034/97]

There are currently 12.20 (whole-time equivalents) social workers attached to maternity hospitals. I am not aware of any evidence to suggest that the number currently employed is not sufficient to meet the demand. However the number employed is subject to regular review to ensure that this demand is satisfied.

Question:

117 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Health and Children the submissions, if any, he has received to increase the number of social workers and other support personnel in the Dublin maternity hospitals; if so, the consideration, if any, he has given to these submissions; the likely increases, if any, over the next 12 months; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16035/97]

My Department has not received any applications from either the Rotunda Hospital or the National Maternity Hospital in respect of additional social worker staff.

The Coombe Hospital management have submitted a list of additional posts required at the hospital, including a medical social worker. No priority for this post has been indicated. My Department will be considering the Coombe's application for additional staff in the context of moneys available in 1998 and in accordance with the hospital's priorities.
