Vol. 481 No. 7

Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Systems.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

235 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the application, if any, he has received from the Garda for the provision of funds to supply closed circuit television cameras in the vicinity of the shopping areas at Ballyfermot Road and Le Fanu Road, Ballyfermot, Dublin 10; if so, if he will provide the funding or approve the funds in 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16963/97]

The Garda Commissioner has established a CCTV advisory group to review the future of CCTV systems as an aid to policing.

It has prioritised the following locations for the installation of Garda CCTV systems: (1) Dublin South Central; (2) Finglas; (3) Cork; (4) Limerick.
I understand that the operational benefits of CCTV in other urban locations are under consideration by the advisory committee and that these will be scheduled as resources become available. However, no application has been received from local community interests for a CCTV system for Ballyfermot. Funding for CCTV is normally provided jointly by local community interests and the Garda Síochána.
