Vol. 481 No. 7

Written Answers. - Weight of School Bags.

Question:

282 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science the action, if any, he has taken in relation to heavy schoolbags contributing to back pain amongst pupils; the scientific evidence, if any, on this matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16826/97]

I have recently set up a working group to examine problems arising from the weight of school bags. The working group is comprised of representatives of parents and teachers as well as medical professionals and Department of Education and Science representatives. The first meeting of the group was held on 9 October 1997. It is expected that the group will report by the end of the year.

This group will address all aspects of the problems posed by the weight of school bags, including any possible implications for the health of pupils. It will also formulate proposals to alleviate such problems.

The Deputy will appreciate that it would be inappropriate of me to make any statement on the matter until such time as the group has submitted its report.
