Vol. 481 No. 7

Written Answers. - Examination Fees.

Pat Carey

Question:

294 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will have investigations made into the possibility of abolishing fees for the junior and leaving certificates in the context of providing equality of access to education. [16956/97]

In the context of providing equality of access and to cope with any hardship caused by the charging of examination fees a total of £500,000 was made available this year to schools so that entry fees could be waived or reduced in the case of necessitous pupils.

It is my intention to improve the amount available for alleviation of examination fees on an ongoing well targeted basis and as resources become available.
