295 Mr. P. Carey asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will examine the introduction and appointment of full-time literacy organisers in an attempt to address the admitted high level of adult illiteracy throughout the country; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [16957/97]
My Department provides funding to the vocational education committees for the operation of the adult literacy and community education scheme. Funding under this scheme is used to remunerate adult literacy organisers. It would be a matter for the vocational education committees to make their own arrangements, within the funds provided, with the organisers on their terms of employment.
There are a number of full-time literacy organisers serving under the vocational education committees at present.
