Vol. 481 No. 7

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

304 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will provide a school bus for the Ballinhassig area for pupils attending Bishopstown community school and Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh, County Cork, as outlined in a request to his Department on 12 September 1997. [17116/97]

Eligible and catchment boundary pupils from the areas in question attending Bishopstown community school and Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh are issued with public scheduled service travel permits, which are valid for travel on scheduled bus services.

In accordance with the terms of the school transport scheme, it is not open to my Department to establish special school transport services in areas where public scheduled bus services already exist. As the level of service available to these pupils is reasonable and adequate in the overall context of the scheme, I regret that I am not in a position to make the changes requested by the Deputy.
