Vol. 481 No. 7

Written Answers. - Crime Forum.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

75 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the composition, terms of reference and progress made on his proposed crime forum; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17078/97]

The Minister intends to establish a crime forum which will canvass comment, assessments and suggestions on crime and crime-related issues from the general community and from both national and international experts. The proceedings of the forum will also assist in the further development of criminal justice policy and, in particular, will help clarify the issues which will need to be addressed in the forthcoming White Paper on Crime. The Minister expects the forum will also provide ideas on how best to structure the community based crime council which he intends to establish.

The Minister is, at present, considering a draft specification for the forum which officials in my Department have drawn up and he would expect to be in a position to make an announcement on the forum in the near future.
