Vol. 482 No. 1

Written Answers. - Grant Payments.

Jim Higgins

Question:

40 Mr. Higgins (Mayo) asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the reason for the non-payment of an approved grant to a community facility (details supplied) in County Mayo. [17232/97]

A grant of £5,000 was formally approved in respect of the facility referred to by the Deputy under the sports capital programme last March. The grant was approved in respect of works to be carried out under contract by a building company.

However, payment was subsequently sought on the basis of invoices for the supply of materials only, as apparently the work had been carried out by workers employed under the FÁS community employment programme with some of the materials costs being met by the applicant.

Under the terms of the sports capital programme, grants are not payable in respect of projects already being assisted by another Government funded scheme, in this case the FÁS community employment programme. The applicant's attention has been drawn to this condition of grant approval and sports section are currently in contact with the applicant about the matter.
