Vol. 482 No. 1

Written Answers. - Grant Payments.

Question:

110 Mr. Hayes asked the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs if he will address the adequate financial need for funding for the Tallaght NOW Group; if he will make provision for a grant to be paid to this group under the locally based women's project scheme, in view of the fact that funds still exist in this scheme for 1997; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17445/97]

The emphasis of the scheme of grants to locally-based women's groups is on making relatively small grants to a large number of local groups. A very big number of applications are received each year and priority is given to applications for first stage personal and community development activities and for community-based education initiatives.

Applications received under this scheme in the Dublin west region have been processed and grants have now been allocated to a large number of groups in that region. It was not possible to allocate a grant to the Tallaght NOW group, having regard to the overall number of applications received and the priorities set under the scheme. However, the group's application is being kept on record and will be reviewed in the light of the end of year expenditure position under the scheme.
