Vol. 482 No. 2

Written Answers - Motor Vehicle Registration.

Michael Ring

Question:

68 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Finance whether a person (details supplied) in County Mayo can be allowed to retain his cherished number plate registration for transferral to his new vehicle; and if he will intervene with Mayo County Council to ensure this registration is retained. [17493/97]

The Office of the Revenue Commissioners is responsible for the registration of all motor vehicles in the State. Under existing legislation, each motor vehicle declared for registration must be assigned a unique number in a specified format which ensures a transparent and consistent system of registration.

There is no provision which allows the transfer of a registration number from one vehicle to another. Therefore, the question of intervention with Mayo County Council does not arise.

Question:

69 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Finance the number of cars which were registered in Ireland for each of the years 1993 to date in 1997; and if he will give details for each county. [17494/97]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the information requested by the Deputy for the years 1993 to 1996 is in the following table. Similar information for 1997 is not available at present but will be forwarded directly to the Deputy as soon as it becomes available in early 1998.
