Vol. 482 No. 2

Written Answers - Obstetric Services.

Dan Neville

Question:

76 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, his Department has to ensure that medical personnel, midwives, support staff, equipment and clinical space are augmented to ensure that services are maintained at least at their current levels in view of the large increase in births reported by the four biggest maternity units in the country (details supplied) over the past two years and in view of the projection that this trend will continue. [17533/97]

I am aware that the maternity hospitals are experiencing an increase in obstetric activity in the current year. My Department is in discussion with the maternity hospitals and the health boards at present regarding the capital and revenue requirements for this sector.

The Deputy can be assured that I am committed to the provision of a quality obstetric service for women.
