Vol. 482 No. 2

Written Answers - Departmental Funding.

Jim Mitchell

Question:

96 Mr. J. Mitchell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his attention has been drawn to the Candle Community Trust proposals for Ballyfermot, Dublin 10; if the project has been approved for funding by his Department; and if he will arrange to provide the necessary funding to help the project get under way in view of the important role it plays in rebuilding lives and diverting youths from crime; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17519/97]

I wish to inform the Deputy that the application for funding from the Candle Community Trust, Ballyfermot, Dublin 10, is still under consideration by my Department.

I am aware of the valuable work which Candle Community Trust carries out with young offenders and disadvantaged young people in the Ballyfermot area. The application is in respect of a very considerable amount of capital funding for the construction of a new centre.

Candle Community Trust has already been advised that it is not possible to provide funding for this project from my Department's 1997 financial allocation which, in fact, is fully committed at this stage. Its proposal will therefore be considered in light of the amount of funding available for 1998.

Probation and welfare service personnel will be in touch with Candle Community Trust shortly.
