Written Answers. - Specified Risk Material Disposal.

Dan Neville

Question:

151 Mr. Neville asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his attention has been drawn to the prohibitive cost of transporting and incinerating special risk material at Monery, County Cavan, for family butchers; the proposals, if any, he has to subsidise this cost; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18039/97]

Developments over the past number of years in relation to BSE have given rise to additional requirements on the sector regarding the treatment and disposal of specified risk material. It is inevitable that such requirements, which are now enshrined in EU law, will give rise to additional costs. However, these costs must be set against the need on the part of the industry to have in place procedures for handling this material which meet the needs of consumers and which allow continued access by Ireland to a wide range of markets.

The costs associated with implementing the existing policy for specified risk material are a matter for the industry and there are no plans for the Exchequer to become involved in subsidising them.
