Vol. 482 No. 3

Written Answers. - Hospital Waiting Lists.

Paul McGrath

Question:

212 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Health and Children the number, in each county in the Midland Health Board area awaiting hip replacement operations; the average waiting time for hip replacement surgery in the midlands; the way in which this waiting time compares to the situation in other health board areas; and if his Department will take an initiative to shorten the waiting list for these operations. [17907/97]

The information requested by the Deputy is not routinely available by county. However, the total number of persons awaiting hip replacement on 30 June 1997 in each health board area is set out in the following table. It is important to note that those on the waiting list in a particular health board area may not necessarily live in that area. The numbers recorded as awaiting treatment in an individual region must be interpreted in this context. The Midland Health Board has been allocated a total of £400,713 in 1997 for its waiting list work, including hip replacements. My Department will shortly be notifying agencies of the steps to be taken during 1998 to continue addressing waiting lists in this and other targeted specialties.
