Vol. 482 No. 3

Written Answers. - Health Care Facilities.

Austin Currie

Question:

227 Mr. Currie asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to the fact that the Eastern Health Board does not provide financial assistance towards the rental of a continuous positive airways machine to non-medical card holders while other boards do provide such assistance; if this policy of the Eastern Health Board is in keeping with the underlying principles of the health strategy which, in relation to equity, states that access to health care should be determined by actual need for services rather than ability to pay or geographic location; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [18083/97]

I have had inquiries made of the Eastern Health Board in this matter and the position is that the board provides financial assistance towards the rental of continuous positive airways pressure machines for non-medical card holders who would suffer undue hardship in meeting the full cost themselves.
