Vol. 482 No. 3

Written Answers. - Test Result Delays.

Enda Kenny

Question:

230 Mr. Kenny asked the Minister for Health and Children if his attention has been drawn to reports that routine smear tests take at least three months before results are sent back in the Western Health Board area; if he will confirm that these reports are accurate; and his views on the facilities available in relation to dealing with such routine tests. [18138/97]

I am aware that in the Western Health Board area the waiting period for the reporting of results of cervical smear tests is in excess of the recommended interval of one month. Under the cancer strategy, approval has been given to the Western Health Board for the appointment of a cytoscreener. I understand from the Western Health Board that interviews have been held. The interview board made a recommendation and this is currently being processed. The board has also appointed a temporary cytoscreener to clear the backlog and reduce the delay in providing results.
