Vol. 482 No. 3

Written Answers. - Karate Funding.

Bernard Allen

Question:

335 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the reason a grant sanctioned in June 1997 to the Irish Karate Union has not yet been paid. [17699/97]

The Irish Karate Union is not a recognised national governing body.

The overall question of the recognition and funding of martial arts in Ireland is currently under review by the Irish Sports Council. In these circumstances my Department and the Sports Council did not consider it appropriate to issue a grant to the Irish Karate Union until the review has been carried out.
