Vol. 482 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Vandalism.

Liam Burke

Question:

400 Mr. L. Burke asked the Minister for Education and Science the cost to his Department of repairs to schools and colleges vandalised in the Cork area over the past five years; the amelioration, if any, there has been in the position over the past 12 months; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17972/97]

Detailed statistical information is not available to my Department on the matters raised by the Deputy in regard to repairs to schools and colleges vandalised in the Cork area over the past five years. Security of school buildings is a matter for the individual school authorities in the first instance.

In general national schools, secondary schools and vocational schools are insured and the Department would not necessarily be informed of incidents of vandalism. Claims in respect of such damage are dealt with by the school authorities usually without reference to the Department.
