Vol. 482 No. 3

Written Answers. - STAD Group.

Jackie Healy-Rae

Question:

103 Mr. Healy-Rae asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if he will give details of all costs, both research and legal, sought from the Exchequer by the representative of the STAD Group; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [18137/97]

The County Louth residents are seeking a Government commitment concerning research and other costs in respect of their independent court action against British Nuclear Fuels Limited (BNFL).

To date, they have submitted eight research proposals which amount to some £240,000. There are also three additional research proposals which have not been costed in detail.

In addition, the residents have submitted a statement of their accumulated legal costs incurred up to 4 January 1997. These costs amount to £710,000 and relate to both their substantive action and to the court action securing their right to have the case heard in the Irish courts.

The Deputy will be aware that the Government has offered a revised package of assistance to the residents relating to research activities mainly. In an effort to progress matters as quickly as possible I have arranged to meet the residents this week to discuss this revised offer of assistance.
