Vol. 482 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Gerry Reynolds

Question:

468 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason persons (details supplied) in County Leitrim are not in receipt of free school transport to a school (details supplied) in County Leitrim. [18956/97]

In order to be eligible for free school transport, children under ten years of age must live at least two miles from, and be attending their nearest national school, while older children must live three miles away. As the pupils referred to by the Deputy live less than two miles from their nearest school, I regret that it is not open to my Department to grant free transport in this case. However, my Department would be prepared to allow these children avail of concessionary fare-paying transport to the school in question. Spare accommodation is available on this service and application can be made through the local Bus Éireann office.
