Vol. 482 No. 7

Written Answers. - Waste Disposal.

John Gormley

Question:

38 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources if his attention has been drawn to the fact that two Irish ships (details supplied) systematically dumped drums of waste in the Irish Sea from 1951 to 1957; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that this waste was in 45 gallon concrete drums which were supposed to be dumped off Rockall but were dumped in the Irish Sea; if his attention has further been drawn to the fact that this was a secret operation and that the crews of the ships were paid extra cash for these assignments; and if he will give Deputy Gormley an assurance that he will do everything in his power to investigate this serious matter in order to determine the contents of the drums, the precise number of drums dumped and the location of these drums. [19023/97]

I assure the Deputy I will carry out the fullest investigation of these allegations, in so far as possible given the period within which the dumping is alleged to have occurred. I will put any information which emerges before the task force I established recently in relation to archival reports of radioactive dumping in the Irish Sea. I have apprised the UK Authorities of the allegations made and have asked that they assist in the investigation. Any further information available to the Deputy, which might assist the investigation, should be communicated to me for inclusion in the investigation.
