Vol. 482 No. 7

Written Answers. - Aviation Accidents.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

66 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the progress, if any, which has been made by his Department regarding the case of a person (details supplied) who went missing following the disappearance of the light aircraft in which he was travelling, while on a journey from Djerba to Malta on 3 December 1995; the outcome, if any, of the most recent inquiry into the matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19255/97]

A Commission of Inquiry established by the Maltese Ministry of Transport in January 1996 to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the aircraft has almost finished its deliberations. It is waiting to receive from Tunisia a tape recording of the last conversations between the pilot of the aircraft and Air Traffic Control at Djerba.

I appreciate the keen desire of the family of the Irish person involved that this investigation be concluded as soon as possible. Through the embassy in Rome and the consulate in Valletta the Department of Foreign Affairs is keeping in touch with developments and is conveying the family's concerns to the Maltese authorities.
