156 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Finance whether he will introduce fiscal and spending incentives to assist the Irish economy in complying with the commitments contained in Sustainable Development, A Strategy for Ireland in order to encourage investment in renewable energy. [19585/97]

The question of fiscal incentives for this area, if appropriate, is a matter for consideration in the context of the budget and Finance Bill.

In regard to spending incentives, the alternative energy requirement — AER — series of alternative energy support initiatives which are funded by European Regional Development Fund moneys under the Operational Programme for Economic Infrastructure, 1994-99, and administered by the Department of Public Enterprise are designed to develop renewable and alternative sustainable energy systems and sources.
