Vol. 482 No. 8

Written Answers. - Policing Arrangements.

Seán Haughey

Question:

243 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if his Department will obtain a report from the Garda Síochána in Santry, Dublin 9 in relation to complaints made by persons (details supplied) in Dublin 5 and 9 concerning the problem of gangs congregating in view of the fact that they are a cause of noise and disturbance; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19352/97]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that, in response to complaints received, the areas in question have been patrolled regularly on foot by community gardaí and mobile patrols. As part of the Garda response to the problem, the parents of youths who were engaged in anti-social activities have been appraised of their children's behaviour. As a result of the Garda attention, these problems have been almost completely eliminated. The Garda has been in contact with the persons referred to by the Deputy and both parties have expressed their appreciation of the attention given.

The situation will be closely monitored by the Garda and the areas will continue to receive appropriate attention.
