Vol. 482 No. 8

Written Answers. - Dairy Hygiene Scheme.

Question:

50 Mr. Coveney asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food when he intends to reopen the dairy hygiene grant aid scheme; and the funds, if any, he has secured to meet the £20 million recommended by the inter-Departmental review group earlier in 1997. [19425/97]

As part of the mid-term review process, the monitoring committee for the operational programme for agriculture, rural development and forestry sought additional funding of £50 million for the control of farm pollution scheme and £20 million for the dairy hygiene scheme.

In the event, reallocations of £28.5 million were made available with £20 million secured for the control of farm pollution scheme and £8.5 million for dairy hygiene.

The extra funds for the dairy hygiene scheme will enable existing commitments to be met and farmers to be paid as soon as the work has been satisfactorily completed. There are no further funds available to enable the scheme to be reopened to new applicants at this time.
