Vol. 483 No. 1

Written Answers. - Ministerial Appointments.

Trevor Sargent

Question:

111 Mr. Sargent asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will supply a listing of all those who have been appointed by him to serve or to represent on the boards of Government agencies, semi-State bodies or other Government linked bodies, and the terms of office of those appointed in this regard. [19730/97]

There are six State boards-agencies which comes under the aegis of the Department of Foreign Affairs. These are: Agency for Personal Service Overseas (APSO); Cultural Relations Committee (CRC); Irish Aid Advisory Committee (IAAC); The National Committee for Development Education (NCDE); The Refugee Agency, and Joint Department of Foreign Affairs-NGO Standing Committee on Human Rights.

Since the formation of the present Government, I have made a total of three appointments to these State boards-agencies.

I appointed an official of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Ms Philomena Murnaghan, to the board of the Agency for Personal Services Overseas and to the committee of the National Committee for Development Education. Ms Murnaghan's appointment on the board of APSO is effective until after the 1998 annual general meeting of APSO and thereafter for a period of five years until after the 2003 annual general meeting.

The term of office of NCDE's committee has expired and Ms Murnaghan's appointment will only be effective until a new committee is appointed.

In addition I appointed Ms Sheila Callan as the Red Cross representative on the board of the Refugee Agency. As this board's term of office has expired a new board is due for appointment shortly.
