Richard Bruton

Richard Bruton

Question:

222 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the total number and gender breakdown of resource teachers for special needs for each county; and the total number of pupils assessed as having special needs enrolled in mainstream schools. [19911/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 218 and 222 together.

There are 1,588 permanent ex-quota remedial teacher posts, 211 permanent resource teacher posts and 14 temporary resource teacher posts in schools at primary and post-primary levels. The information regarding the number of remedial and resource posts by county is outlined in tables A and B.

It is a matter for the board of management of each school with an ex-quota resource teacher to recruit the teacher whom they consider to be most suitable, irrespective of gender. Information on the gender of resource teachers is not kept in my Department in a readily accessible format.

The information regarding the number of pupils assessed as having special needs who are enrolled in mainstream schools is not available. However, it is estimated that there are approximately 8,000 children with special needs attending schools on a fully integrated basis.
