Vol. 483 No. 2

Written Answers. - Hospital Services.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

131 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health and Children whether he has satisfied himself that the modern technology currently available in all hospitals is comparable to that available throughout Europe and, consequently, conducive to attracting young medical and surgical professionals; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20006/97]

The reasons young doctors choose to spend part of their training abroad are many and varied. One of the principal reasons is to gain experience which is not readily available here. It has never been suggested that dissatisfaction with the level of equipment in hospitals is a significant factor in the decision to spend time abroad. The majority of consultants appointed to Irish hospitals return from positions in prestigious and well-equipped centres in other countries.
