61 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his views on whether the excessive profit margins of building contractors are contributing to the escalation of the price of new houses; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20244/97]

I have appointed consultants to examine the factors underlying the increases in house prices in the period since January 1994, with particular emphasis on the Dublin region and changes in margins on house building will be one of the matters to be looked at in the context of the study.
