Vol. 483 No. 3

Written Answers. - Political Funding.

Thomas P. Broughan

Question:

62 Mr. Broughan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will amend the Companies Act to require public companies to disclose donations of greater than £500 to political parties in their annual accounts particularly in view of the spending by certain parties in the recent general election and the lead-in period to that election. [16855/97]

Section 26 of the Electoral Act, 1997 provides, inter alia, that a company must include in the report by its directors under section 158 of the Companies Act, 1963 and the annual return under section 125 or 126 of that Act, as may be appropriate, particulars of all political donations exceeding £4,000 in value made by the company in the year to which the report relates.

I have no proposals to amend that provision.
