69 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if it is intended to hold local government elections in 1998; the steps, if any, he is taking to review the composition of local government electoral areas in view of the significant population changes in many wards since the last election; and if he will make a statement on the matter. 77 Mrs. Owen asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he will review electoral area boundaries before the next elections of members to county councils, county borough councils, corporations, urban district councils and town commissions; and if he will make a statement on the matter. I propose to take Questions Nos. 69, 77 and 265 together.

As I indicated in reply to Question No. 30 on 14 October 1997 local elections are, by virtue of section 20 of the Local Government Act, 1994, due to be held in June 1998. The need to revise local electoral areas is being examined in the light of the recently published population figures in the 1996 census.
