Question:

135 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform if he will give details of the criteria on which decisions to grant permission to US citizens to reside in the State are based; whether there has been a change in these criteria; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20657/97]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 134 and 135 together. There are no special criteria regarding the grant of permission to remain in the State which apply to citizens of the USA alone.

The provisions which apply in relation to residence by non-EEA nationals generally are contained in the Aliens Act, 1935 (No. 14 of 1935), the Aliens Order, 1946 (No. 395 of 1946) and the Aliens (Amendment) Order, 1975 (No. 128 of 1975). The number of USA nationals registered with the Garda Síochána at the end of 1996 was 3,307.
