Vol. 483 No. 4

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Billy Kelleher

Question:

148 Mr. Kelleher asked the Minister for Education and Science the measures, if any, he will take to ensure that a drop in numbers entering a school (details supplied) in County Cork will not force the school to lose a teacher of non-permanent position in view of the fact that this will mean only one European language will be available on the curriculum. [20728/97]

The initial teacher allocation to individual second level schools for a particular school year consists of the allocation warranted by the enrolment in the school at the end of September in the preceding school year together with approved ex-quota or concessionary posts. It is a matter for the board of management, having regard to the needs of the students and the overall approved teacher allocation, to decide what subjects in addition to the core curriculum subjects should be offered to students.

It is expected that the board of management of the school referred to by the Deputy will be notified of the initial teacher allocation for the 1998-99 school year in February 1998. In accordance with normal procedures, it will be open to the board to submit an appeal to my Department for an increase in the allocation at that time. Should such an appeal be submitted, it will be considered in the normal way.
