Noel Ahern

Question:

150 Mr. N. Ahern asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of national schools and the location of each which have special care assistants; the number of these which are regarded as special schools; the number of pupils with disabilities a school must have to warrant a care assistant; the number which will be appointed in 1998; the position of a school (details supplied) in Dublin 9 on the list; and if he will make a statement on the matter. My Department has allocated 270 child care assistant posts to 97 national schools. Eighty-eight of these schools are special national schools dedicated to catering for children with particular disabilities. The 270 posts in question are located as follows:

When available, child care assistant posts are allocated on the basis of priority of need. There is no minimum requirement in terms of pupil numbers. The level of need of the children is the determining factor.
I am currently reviewing resource allocations across the special education sector, including the child care area, to ensure that all available resources are applied to maximum effect. However, I am not in a position at this stage to indicate how many additional child care assistants will be appointed in 1998. I am aware that the school to which the Deputy refers has made application to my Department for a child care assistant post. I can assure the Deputy that the needs of this school will be fully considered in the context of any additional resource allocations which may be undertaken in the special needs area.
