Vol. 483 No. 4

Written Answers. - Homelessness Assessment.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

112 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has comprehensively quantified the current extent of homelessness throughout the entire country; the evaluation, if any, which has examined the extent of the problem in town and city, urban and rural areas; the proposals, if any, he has for the resolution of this issue; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20797/97]

An assessment of the numbers of homeless people at 31 March 1996 was carried out by local authorities in conjunction with their assessment of housing needs at that date. Details of each authority's assessment are included in Part XIII of the Department's Housing Statistics Bulletin for 1996, copies of which are in the Oireachtas Library.

I refer to the reply to Question No. 32 of 25 November which sets out measures taken to deal with homelessness.
